Joy to the world the midterm elections are over …la-la-la-la-la!!!

Who is missing that dinner time robocall – not me, sister!

Stacks of political fliers on the kitchen counter – nope, nope, nope

Angry social media posts – who’s been on social, right!?!?!

Before we ease back into our American normal, let’s pause and discuss what is B.R.O.K.E.N. about our healthcare system – a.k.a the lack of health.

Before you roll your eyes, this has nothing to do with politics but it has a lot to do with the mindset of many of my fellow Americans. I’ll give you an example. Not too long ago, I had a woman come into clinic complaining about her weight after having had a baby a few years prior.  She is no different than millions of women who sacrifice their metabolisms to the fertility gods. It was in the crapper. She could smell a muffin and have it magically appear around her waist.

“I have 2 gym memberships,” she told me “but I never go”.

Say what?

Now, that’s like saying you walked by the lotto store and didn’t win a jackpot. If you wanna win, girl, you gotta invest! It is NO different from our health – physical, mental, spiritual. You can lay your money down but have you INVESTED where it counts?

We talk a good game ‘Merica about the pursuit of happiness – but are we invested in it? Investment means we reallocate time, funds, and mental space to something that’s important to us.  If you want LESS stress you gotta invest in what it takes to have less stress.

You want to lose 50 lbs? A shelf full of books and Pinterest recipes isn’t going to cut it. You have to INVEST the time and mental space to get those lbs off.

Somewhere along the way, we have replaced making an investment with paying for something.  You can pay for a lot of things, but if you don’t invest in them nothing really happens. Think of it as a tree. You can buy a sapling …….. doesn’t mean you are gonna get a tree, baby!  You have to invest in it – plant it, water it, prune it, WORK IT! That’s the same for you and your health, wealth and pursuit of happiness. Don’t throw a few bucks at “ it” once in a while and expect a miracle.

This is ESPECIALLY true for your health! We have a culture of “quick fixes” like:

  • Blood pressure up – there’s a pill for that
  • BMI sky high  – here’s a surgery
  • Diabetes – jab yourself after every meal

How about we REALLY invest in our health and healthCARE and not only when we have had a health SCARE?  Sure, it’s more work but the rewards are greater – and often times worth more than we would have ever expected. There really are some things money can’t buy!
