AhTH eh NEE um
- an institution for the promotion of literary or scientific learning.
- a free library or reading room maintained by such an institution.
In Ancient Greece, the word Athenaeum referred to buildings dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and a particular temple in Athens where poets, philosophers, and orators gathered to read and discuss their work. Over the centuries the term also has applied to numerous academies and learned societies (Albert Einstein belonged to one such guild).
Our athenaeum is a community “interested in scientific and literary pursuits and meeting for the purpose of mutual improvement.”
